Scorton Scramble: Wearmouth visit pays off

A visit from County Durham by Stuart Wearmouth (Picarsso-Pulman RT) paid off and sent Stuart home with some valuable early-season points at trhe Scorton Scramble on Sunday. The North West cyclocross season opener took place in pleasant weather but the expected soggy groundwater made going hard for a September race with a good deal of running.   Wheelbase/Gore bike wear’s Lewis Craven took second place some 20 seconds down on Wearmouth in his forst competitive outing since early July, and Zeptnat’s veteran Matt Denby was third.

The sunny day helped the riders, in a small way, to deal with the very muddy conditions but race organisers did have some problems reading the numbers for scoring. It was suggested that next time a hose should be set up at the start / finish line to blast the mud off the riders as they pass.

The youth race produced a great winning performance from Scott Woodhead (West Pennine RC) followed closely by the two Jacks; Jack Bowyer (Sport City) and Jack Humphreys (Red Rose Olympic) finishing 2nd and 3rd. First U16 girl was Becky Preece (Red Rose Olympic). In the under 14’s Jack Sadler (Wheelbase) made a good start with a fine win with Zoe Armstrong (RVJCRC) finishing as first U14 Girl.

A large field of U12’s took to the start line including a number of first time cross riders. A sterling effort from all who tackled a slightly shorter but very challenging course. I counted them all out and I counted them all back. It’s a good job the youngsters like the mud. A good strong win for Robert Armstrong (RVJCRC) followed closely by Fabian Brennan (Cog Set) and Matthew Walls (Eastlands) who was also first under 10. Second under 10 was Sam Hollingworth (Red Rose Olympic) in his first ever competitive cycle race and first U10 girl was Kim Baptista (Eastlands). A big well done to the under 8s who all completed the race.

Finally, thanks goes to all the competitors who supported the race and helped the organisers with the finishing positions. See you all in January for the Scorton Scramble 2.
