Matt’s Down, but Coming Back Stronger.

All those at the North West League round 2 at Northwich could not help but know about a nasty crash that took place on the first lap of the senior race.

Matt Winston who many know, for his popular coaching sessions around Manchester and the North West was just starting his second ‘cross race back having taken a few years out of the discipline when he left British Cycling’s Olympic Development Program. Matt was typically full of smiles, laughs and jokes before the start, but fell heavily on one of the early corners.

After the race one of the Horwich riders that had been near him at the time, said that they herd a load crack and assumed his frame had snapped. His fan club from the youth and under 12 races rushed over, but it was obvious he was in need of more specialist attention.

Matt was taken to Layton Hospital where he was found to have broken his leg in three places; they operated on him on Monday to put a plate and pins in the offending limb. He’s continued to be as positive as ever and wanted to pass on this thanks to all those that assisted him and the race to continue. A special mention must go to Phil Braybrooke of Sports City Velo, who not only stopped his own race to help Matt but went with him to hospital, to make sure he was OK.

Matt’s obviously going to be away from his coaching duties for a little while, but says he will be back involved as soon as he can, all the very best Matt.
