Notching up his third league win in a row, Giles Drake (Team Elite) won the Liverpool Mercury round of the North West League promoted by Liverpool Mercury CC at Stadt Moers Country Park in Whiston.

Drake, 27 and from the Wirral, edged ahead of event Junior rider and event favourite Thomas Armstrong (Wheelbase) in a tight sprint to take the win and add to his overall points tally for the league.

The pair were head and shoulders above the rest of the 112-strong field in the Senior event which was held on a unseasonally dry and fast course. The entry level was a record for a Liverpool Mercury event.

Third spot went to Paul Bethell (Team Elite), who was more than three minutes back on the fast, non-technical course, and held off Cycle Sport Pendle’s Martin Woffindin for the final podium spot.

Meanwhile, a donation was made by each rider for Reg Stanistreet of the promoting club, who is still seriously injured in Southport Spinal Unit following a simple fall on his bike eight weeks ago.
